Roleystone Community College finds a winner in Maths Trek

Maths Trek 19/5/25

At Roleystone Community College, an independent public school south-east of Perth, selecting the right educational resources is a collaborative effort between the leadership team and classroom teachers. They conduct internal surveys and frequently share best practice to ensure everyone is on the same page. This is why, just four months into their implementation of Maths Trek, the school is already seeing promising results. Teachers at Roleystone have highlighted the program’s ease of use, engaging content and clear lesson structure.

Let’s unpack some key insights that Roleystone staff have shared about their Maths Trek journey so far.

Free trial enables confident decision-making

Roleystone Community College staff were already familiar with Maths Trek prior to implementation, having spent some time in 2024 trialling the program. The hands-on experience gave teachers a chance to explore the program in real classroom settings and gauge student engagement firsthand.

With a Maths Trek trial, schools have access to a wide range of effective and impactful resources from the first six units of the program, providing a clear look at the scope and depth of the online teaching site. Each topic and problem-solving strategy unit comes with a detailed lesson guide and engaging slideshow. The trial also enables teachers to explore revision and assessment units, critical thinking lessons and other resources such as songs, videos and preparation and planning documents.

The trial units culminate in the first major investigation of the year – an exciting opportunity for students to dive into extended, unfamiliar problems and apply their learning to real-life contexts. Plus, the trial gives a taste of what’s available on the student site, including interactive tools and the fun, fluency-building Daily Number Practice activities.

With implementation of Maths Trek at Roleystone now well underway, it’s safe to say the trial was a huge success – giving the leadership team the evidence they needed to confidently take the next step.

Teachers praise Firefly’s professional learning

Firefly Education’s free professional learning workshops are hugely popular with schools new to a program or simply needing a refresher to ensure the best delivery possible. So when Firefly’s Education Consultant for WA schools Jess Mason reached out offering complimentary professional learning, Roleystone leapt at the opportunity.

Soon afterwards, the school shared some of the feedback it had collected on the session. Overall, teachers had more confidence in navigating the program, as well as a deeper understanding of the research-informed thinking behind Maths Trek and its structure.

Jess commented on Roleystone’s enthusiasm, saying ‘how great it is seeing the school participate in professional learning’ and that she appreciates a leadership team ‘so proactively seeking staff feedback and input when adopting a new resource’. This was reinforced by the number of teachers who expressed interest to the leadership team in booking a follow-up professional learning workshop to maximise their delivery of Maths Trek in the classroom. Needless to say, Jess is looking forward to returning later in the year to such an enthusiastic and collaborative school community. The follow-up workshop gives her an opportunity to address some of the queries around how Maths Trek resources can support differentiation – one of the key challenges that Roleystone teachers (like all teachers) face in the classroom.

The power of meaningful feedback

As part of their collaborative approach, the leadership team surveyed teachers about their experience using Maths Trek and shared the results with Firefly. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with staff giving the program an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Teachers highlighted the clear lesson plans, strong student engagement and ease of use as stand-out features.

One teacher shared: ‘I love the realistic timeframes of the program and the option to show answers online for peer marking and immediate group feedback.’ The gradual release approach also received praise, especially the ‘scaffolded learning in steps to help support concepts for the kids’. On a broader level, teachers described the program as ‘user-friendly and intuitive’ with one enthusiastically adding, ‘I really like the program so far. I think we’re on to a winner!’

The early success at Roleystone Community College is a testament to the collaborative culture within the school community and highlights the impact of a strong program supported by quality professional learning.
