Firefly Education Directors nominated for 2025 Queensland Philanthropy Awards

12/6/25

Local philanthropists and business leaders Ann Smales and Peter Stannard, owners and directors of Firefly Education, have been shortlisted for the 2025 Queensland Philanthropy Awards. Their nomination, made by SunnyKids and announced during Queensland Philanthropy Week, recognises their pivotal role in the SunnyKids Transitional Housing Project—a life-changing initiative supporting families escaping domestic and family violence.

The project, a direct response to the growing housing crisis on the Sunshine Coast, aims to create safe, supported transitional housing for vulnerable families. Thanks to the generosity of Ann and Peter, the first stage of the project—three 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom townhouses—is fully funded and well into construction. They also donated the land on which the homes will be built, underlining their deep personal commitment to driving real change in their community.

‘We believe every family deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and stable home,’ said Peter Stannard. ‘Supporting this project through SunnyKids is our way of giving families a second chance—one that empowers them to move forward with dignity and hope.’

The idea for the project began with a simple but powerful conversation. After attending a SunnyKids P100 event and hearing firsthand the devastating impact of the housing crisis on local families, Ann and Peter were moved to take action. With years of desire to give back in the social housing space, the timing was right—and their vision quickly took shape with the support of SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope and builder James McCartney.

‘These homes will provide more than just a roof over a family’s head—they will offer the support, stability and space to heal and move toward independence,’ said Ms Hope. ‘We are deeply grateful to Firefly Education for being the catalyst to make this vision a reality.’

Ann and Peter’s impact extends far beyond bricks and mortar. As long-time supporters of SunnyKids, they’ve involved their entire Firefly Education team in hands-on activities, from assembling bikes and flat-pack desks for children in refuge, to promoting awareness and fundraising within their networks. Their unique blend of corporate leadership and heartfelt community involvement sets a shining example of philanthropy in action.

‘We feel incredibly honoured to be nominated,’ said Ann Smales. ‘This project has been a true labour of love for our team. While Firefly’s work in education has a broad impact nationally, this initiative has allowed us to do something deeply meaningful for our own community here on the Sunshine Coast.’

While Peter and Ann didn’t take the top spot, they were honoured to be shortlisted in the Top 3. Ultimately, they hope this project inspires others to get involved — whether through time, resources or support.

For Ann, Peter, and the entire Firefly Education team, the message is simple: lasting change starts with local action, and there’s never been a more urgent time to act.
